Dear Intermediate Orchestra Parents,
Thank you for your support at our recent Open House and
parent booster meeting. The Intermediate Orchestras are hard at work preparing
for our first performance. Included in this letter is concert uniform
information as well as some of the items discussed at the parent booster
meeting.
Concert Uniform
All GVHS Orchestra students wear the same concert uniform
for all of our formal concerts. The first concert the Intermediate Orchestra
will perform is our Winter Concert on Wednesday, December 9. Please make
arrangements to obtain the following uniform in time for this concert. We will
also be shooting group yearbook pictures in December and students will wear
their concert uniforms for this as well.
Girls Boys
Floor length GVHS black dress Black long sleeve dress
shirt
Black stockings or tights Black dress or
tux pants
Black dress shoes Black
long tie
Black dress shoes
and socks
Black jacket
(optional)
Girls who did not own the GVHS long black dress will be fitted
for one in class in a couple of weeks. The dresses will be ordered and should
arrive by the beginning of November. The cost of the dress is $72.00 and needs
to be paid for as soon as you are able. GVHS
only accepts cash, money order, or cashier’s check for uniforms. You may also
pay on the GVHS web store with a minimal service charge added. Please also note that the dress comes extra
long so it will need to be hemmed before the concert in December. Boys should
purchase the uniform above from a store of their choice.
Fundraising
We will have several fundraising activities throughout the
school year. Students currently have the opportunity to sell add space for our
concert programs. The deadline is past for the Pasta Supper program but there
are three programs remaining. For every ad the student sells he/she earns 75%
of the ad cost in their fundraising accounts. As a bonus for any ad that a
family member purchases the student will earn 100% of the ad cost in their
fundraising accounts. We will be starting a caramel apple fundraiser in a few
weeks. Your students will be bringing an order form and will have about week to
sell apples. The apples will be delivered October 28 in time for Halloween
celebrations.
Pasta Supper
You are cordially invited to our annual Performing Arts
Department Pasta Supper. The dinner and concert will take place on Wednesday,
October 7. Doors open for the silent
auction at 5:30 p.m. with dinner starting to be served at 6:00 p.m. Both the
Symphony and Chamber Orchestras will be performing beginning with the Combined
Orchestras at 5:30 p.m. and the Symphony Strings at approximately 6:10 p.m. The
orchestra concerts will be followed by a performance by the GVHS Marching Band
and the GVHS Choirs Fall Concert. The dinner of salad, rolls, pasta marinara,
chicken parmigiana, and cake is being catered by Ventano’s Italian Restaurant.
Tickets for the Pasta Supper may be purchased for $10.00 pre-sale and $12.00 at
the door. Tickets are available in the orchestra office or from any Symphony or
Chamber Orchestra student.
Winter Concert Raffle
The parent booster club will be holding a raffle at our
Winter Concert on Wednesday, December 9. We are currently looking for prizes
for this raffle. If you have connections with local businesses (restaurants,
coffee houses, show tickets, etc.) we would appreciate you seeking donations
from them. We will also be providing a donation letter in a few weeks to use
when soliciting donations.
Home Practice
The importance of home practice cannot be stressed
enough. Please encourage your student to
set a regular practice time and to share with you what they are working on in
their orchestra class. Violin and viola
players should be taking their instruments home on a REGULAR basis and ALL
cello and bass players should have playable instruments to practice on at home.
If this is an issue, please contact me as soon as possible. If your child
currently does not have their own instrument, please consider renting one from
one of our local music stores. I can certainly make recommendations as to good
places to rent for reasonable prices. The best situation for a student is to
own or rent their own but if this is not possible they should have already been
assigned a school instrument to use.
Class Fees/ Handbook Paperwork
Please try to take care of any paperwork and/or class fees
that have not been paid yet as soon as you can. All fees and paperwork were due
in mid-September but we still have several students who have not taken care of
these items. If you are having difficulties with the fee, please contact me to
make arrangements.
Thank you for your continued support of the GVHS Orchestra
program. I am extremely grateful to be teaching such outstanding students and I
look forward to many wonderful performances with them. Please feel free to contact me with any
questions or concerns you might have. My
email is sab564@interact.ccsd.net and my school phone number is 799-0950 ext.
4063.
Sincerely,
Shelly Burger
